Cagliari lies in the south of the Italian island of Sardinia. It can be reached by plane or ship.

Cagliari's "Mario Mameli" International airport, about 20 minutes away from the city centre, allows daily connections with the many national and international cities. A shuttle service connects the airport to the city centre in Piazza Matteotti. close to the port and the railway station. Taxis and rent-a-car services are readily available at the airport.

The Port of Cagliari, one of the largest seaports in the Mediterranean Sea, is situated in the centre of the city and overlooks the famous via Roma. Daily ferry boat connections with many destinations are available. Cagliari is also an important landing place to several ships cruising the Mediterranean.
The central railway station allows daily train connections with other Sardinian cities.

Other two smaller international airports, Alghero and Olbia, located in the north of Sardinia, also offer daily connections with many destinations.

The host city, CAGLIARI

"Cagliari is the city of Love.." said Sardinian Noble Prize in Literature Grazia Deledda.

"Cagliari...golden-looking...rising rather bare and proud a town in a monkish, illuminated missal" with these words D.H. Lawrence described the city of the sun when he saw it for the first time.

Cagliari, the heart of the Mediterranean, has always fascinated travellers from all over the world with its millenary history and breathtaking natural beauty. The capital of Sardinia, a beautiful, light-filled mediterranean city, boasts important traces of its rich past: ancient Roman ruins, museums filled with prehistoric artefacts, centuries-old churches and elegant palazzi. All around, beautiful sandy beaches with limpid blue waters and wonderful naturalistic parks.

Cagliari, with a metropolitan area of about half a million inhabitants, is a  surprisingly lively city, which offers an actrative mix of history, nature, beach turism and night life. A dynamic cultural centre thanks to its museums, monuments, theatres like the Teatro Lirico and last but not least University with hundreds of students coming from many different countries.

Cagliari is an innovative and sustanaible city with a 7-km-long city beach, naturalistic parks and environment-friendly areas.

The heart of the city is the Castello district ("Casteddu" as locals call it using a term which also describe the whole city), the hilltop citadel, is Cagliari’s most iconic image, rising above the ramparts built by the Pisans and Aragonese. The old medieval city with its hidden jewels: the cathedral, museums, beautiful palaces, fascinating narrow high-walled alleys with boutiques, bars and cafes.

Crystal clear water: the wonderful Poetto beach (photo: license Adobe Stock)

Cagliari lies on the shore of the beautiful Gulf of the Angels. In a few minutes by bus or even on foot, you can reach its Poetto sandy beach, beyond the green Promontorio di Sant'Elia (Cape S.Elia), nicknamed the Sella del Diavola (Devil's Saddle, read the legend). The beachfront area offers restaurants, bars, beach resorts, diving centres and surf schools. Poetto is the favourite place for the inhabitants of Cagliari during summer season and also in any other sunny day in the rest of the year.

Another jewel close to the city centre is the Molentargius natural park, the favourite dwelling of the flamingos. In the past, for centuries, Molentargius was the richest Sardinian basin where sea salt was extracted, a practice that was interrupted in 1985. Its name, su molenti, meaning donkey in Campidano dialect, confirms the historical means of transport used for the precious loads.

Last but not least, Sardinia has always boasted a renowned food and wine tradition. Whether on the coast or inland, Sardinia's delicious specialities are based on simple and genuine ingredients. Pecorino cheese, artichoke, saffron and bottarga (salted, cured fish roe) are just a few of the high quality products of this amazing region. Restaurants, wine bars and cafes, both in the old town and on the seaside, are plentiful in Cagliari. The city restaurant scene keeps cooking up new trends. Regional and seasonal produce is top of the menu right now but many restaurants are also specialising in vegetarian cuisine.

Festa di Sant'Efisio

The colourful celebration of Sant'Efisio (St Ephisius) is one of the oldest religious events in Italy and the most engaging of the island.  Every year, on May 1st, the effigy of St Ephisius, Cagliari’s patron saint, is taken from the Chiesa di Sant'Efisio and paraded through the streets on a bullock-drawn carriage. The saint is then carried to Nora,40km away, from where he returns on May 4th for yet more festivities.

Thousands of people gather in Cagliari every year for this event which is considered among the most interesting religious celebrations in Italy.

The Festa di Sant'Efisio in 2020 will be held a few days after the IESES conference.

So, why don't you consider spending a few more days in Sardinia and make your stay in Cagliari really unforgettable?

And all around Cagliari... SARDINIA, the pearl of the Mediterranean!

"This land does not look like any other place. Sardinia is something else: enchanting space all around and distances to be travelled, nothing is finite, nothing is defined. It is like freedom itself.» (David Herbert Lawrence).

An incredible mix of millenary history, culture, nature and traditions: that's Sardinia, a real place of the heart. Every year millions of visitors come from all over the world to this dreamland between sea and sky. IESES will give you a great chance to discover it, don't miss this opportunity!.

From Sardinia to the most famous Italian destinations
Last but not least, besides Cagliari and Sardinia, IESES will offer a great chance to visit some of the other Italian world-famous cultural and historic destinations.
Direct daily flights connect Cagliari airport to the main Italian cities.
For instance, it takes only one hour flight to reach Rome, Naples or Tuscany (Pisa airport). Milan, Turin or Venice are just 90 minutes' travel away.
Spending some more days in Italy before or after the conference would certainly be an excellent decision.
